Jeg sitter i det eneste hyggelige huset jeg har boet i – i Åsgårdstrand

It’s shoreline that immediately catches Munch’s interest this first time in Åsgårdstrand. More paintings from 1889 and 1890 shows how he is dealing with this, closest to familiarize themselves with it. Images are however in a completely different pictorial expression than what would later become almost his signature Åsgårdstrand. The images are also more impressionistic. The common denominator is that they catch the summer’s light and quiet pursuits.

An important picture pointing towards what comes later, “Inger on the Beach”, in which Munch focuses on the solitary figure, placed in a transparent and simplified landscapes.
